Robberies In Washington D.C. On The Rise
Without discretion, they’re happening on residential streets, near busy retail corridors and well-lit Metro stations. In an area not quite used to a crime spike of this size, armed robberies are taking place with alarming frequency in D.C. While D.C. crime is nothing new, the stark increase in the amount of D.C. robberies is alarming. A crime such as robbery is a crime committed with the intention of making money. With the economy struggling, and drug dealing currently no longer as profitable, many youths are turning to robbery as an alternative method to to pad their pockets. Unfortunately, this significant increase in Washington D.C. crime is starting to push citizens of the city to live in a state of fear. During the first three weeks of January alone there were eight reported armed robberies committed in Washington D.C., a number significant enough that it should help draw some attention to this rapidly growing epidemic. February and March 2012 saw even greater crime numbers. With all that Washington D.C. stands for it’s completely unacceptable to have the population of the city forced to live under such conditions. Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States, and as such it should be the finest example of what this great country has to offer.
Unfortunately, finding a way to combat the increase in D.C. robberies will likely take a community wide effort. While the police and government are charged with keeping the city safe and enforcing laws, they simply cannot be everywhere at once, and with declining budgets an increase in numbers is unlikely. Public knowledge of this rapidly growing issue needs to be escalated, and people need to start traveling in groups when out on the D.C. streets. The short term solution: there is force in numbers, so by having more people out in public places this should help deter crime and the number of robberies should begin to recede. For those wandering the D.C. streets you should consider not carrying cash or electronics, and ladies watch the pocketbooks. In addition to public knowledge and numbers to discourage crime, taking a proactive approach with the young people living in Washington D.C. can also help to lower the amount of crime. By giving young people alternative activities such as sports, or community events they can be occupied while doing positive things instead of being tempted by crime. Of course in a tough economy, the discretionary money for organized activities dwindles.
Without proper action being taken now there will in all likelihood will continue to be a crime and robbery increase in Washington D.C.. Washington D.C. crime is now beginning to result in the community living in a state of constant fear. The community at-large has a responsibility now to be more proactive deterring crime, and less reliant on the hopes that the D.C. Police force will step up and squash the growing issue. By using multiple approaches to combat the crime increase in Washington D.C. the crime problem can at least be somewhat minimized. If the alarming increase goes unnoticed for much longer, force in numbers will no longer assist in deterring crime, and the streets of D.C. will become unsafe to the point that it will start to damage the D.C. economy as D.C. residents and visitors retreat in fear.
